Getting started

  1. Type your text, or pick one of the samples.
  2. Choose a font. The preview shows exactly what the PDF will contain.
  3. Pick the guide lines. Each colour marks one typographic line: violet for the ascender and descender, blue for the cap height, green for the x-height, red for the baseline.
  4. Set the ink. Template prints at full strength so you can slip the sheet under a clean page; Trace and Ghost are light enough to write over.
  5. Download the PDF and print it at 100%, with no page scaling.

Sheet types

  • Flow wraps your text across the sheet, like a page of writing.
  • Repeat tiles a short word or letter across every row — the classic drill sheet.
  • Trace puts a model at the top and leaves the rest blank for you.

Using the guide lines

  • The baseline is where the letters sit. The x-height line caps the lowercase body.
  • Keep ascenders and descenders reaching to their own lines; that is what makes writing look even.
  • Slant lines help you hold a consistent pen angle. 55° is the copperplate convention; 90° is upright.

Decorating a sheet

  • Flourishes sit around the text — left, right, above, below — once per block. Set an invitation, print it, then trace it onto an envelope over a lightbox.
  • Rows to trace fills every row with the same flourish instead, which is the drill version of the same shape.
  • A decorated initial enlarges the first letter across two or more rows and sets the text beside it. It can use a second font: a period face for the letter and a script for the text.
  • Both pair well with Outlines to colour in — a 60pt letter you fill with a brush teaches more than a solid one.

Your text stays yours

Everything runs in your browser. No text, font or sheet is ever sent anywhere, and shared links keep the text in the part of the URL that is never sent to a server. The site counts page views with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and records nothing that identifies you.
